What is the risk factor of injuries in Martial Arts training?

It can happen. During the process of learning how to stretch the body, you may pull muscles. During fundamental drills you could slip on a pool of sweat and strain yourself. You can hurt your back if you don't warm up. You might get a punch on the noggin when beginning to learn how to spar. The goal of the instruction should not be to hurt or to hit. But it does happen. Accidents can and do happen. You can save yourself a lot of pain by doing just a few simple things. Take enough time to stretch and warm up before you begin training. If you need more time, take it. You are a free person and do not have to cave in to any pressure to do something you don't want to. If the training is getting too excessive or reckless in your opinion simply ask your Sensei to stop the part that is bothering you. You are not living in pre-war Japan and are not preparing for enemies invading your country. Be moderate in your approach and feel absolutely comfortable exercising your free will.

When you spar, you will be learning how to deliver strikes and how to take them as well. Bushido Kan Karate Dojo is a contact sparring environment where we do strike one another. This is done in a controlled manner, and the higher in rank you travel the more contact that is allowed. The primary reason for contact training is that the student will have a clear understanding of the applications of the techniques when being used in real life. We do not strike full contact, but you will be hit with control, precision and focus.

Injuries in the Martial Arts are not even comparable to the injuries that High School sports participants receive. There have been many University studies done injuries in physical training and the Martial Arts have always been listed as one of the safest to participate in. The reasons sited for the rating include "ability to control strikes", "understanding how to properly and safely deliver the techniques" and "the professional ability to control the classes of the coaches (Sensei)".
