Is karate dangerous and effective?

Yes. Karate can be deadly. There is no other way to say this because it is simply a fact. A good karate-ka can literally kill with his bare hands (it usually requires training in advanced black belt courses around 3rd to 4th dan to learn these techniques). If you learn karate it will be like someone giving you a loaded gun. Luckily, this level of karate takes a long time to learn and by the time you get to the level of being able to deliver lethal damage a lot of the training of temperance, good judgment, a strong desire to seek out peaceful means of ending conflict, and a desire to improve your personal character will be so ingrained in your head that you will probably not be a public menace. Karate is dangerous, but so is owning a gun. Knowing karate comes with great responsibility to use it wisely, prudently, and judiciously.

The public courts also take a very dim view of anyone using martial arts skill in assaulting another person. If you use karate in any kind of physical way that is not in self-defense* you may find yourself in a lot of trouble. Society generally expects more restraint from karate practitioners than those who do not learn this powerful art.

* Self-Defense is defined as using the correct amount of force to walk safely away from a conflict as the situation requires. Failure to follow this legal definition of Self-Defense can result in criminal charges.
